Join Us for a Special Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Charles Darwin Research Station

Please join us for a special celebration of a half-century of groundbreaking scientific research and conservation by the Charles Darwin Research Station, the oldest, largest, and most successful scientific institution in the Galapagos Islands. The event is sponsored by the Charles Darwin Foundation and IGTOA.

The highlight of the evening will be a presentation by Dr. Frank Sulloway, who has been carrying out research in the Galapagos Islands for 46 years. Dr. Sulloway will focus on which recent scientific discoveries would most interest and surprise Charles Darwin if he were alive today and was updating “The Origin of the Species.”

The presentation will interweave the latest understandings of the impacts of introduced species in the Galapagos, recent research on sexual selection, mate choice, nesting behavior, and reproductive success in Darwin’s finches and new evidence that seems to vindicate some of Darwin’s most controversial views on the principle of natural selection. This presentation was given to the staff and scientists of the Charles Darwin Research Station and was so successful that we felt it deserved a wider audience.

Dr. Sulloway's presentation will be followed by a Q&A session moderated by Prof. Mark Richards, Dean of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at UC Berkeley.

This memorable evening is brought to you by the Charles Darwin Foundation and the International Galapagos Tour Operators Association, which actively collaborate to preserve and protect the Galapagos Islands and promote scientific research there. It is an event to celebrate the international partnerships that are helping to fund and operate the Charles Darwin Research Station, aimed at preserving the unique Galapagos Islands.

The evening will start at 6:00 with a reception until 7:30, where South American-inspired tapas, beer and wine will be served.
