San Jose

Explorers and eager headers-into-the-new are a migratory sort, willing to travel thousands of miles in order to be “there.” For some of us, “there” is the glorious Galapagos Islands, where birds don’t fly away when you pass by and baby seals flipper-scurry up the beach to see if you want to play.

To get to such enchanted lands, you need a base of operations, a mobile platform that will enable you to discover and examine myriad facets of the fascinating Galapagos Islands. The San Jose motor yacht is the perfect choice.

The 113-foot-long, Tourist Superior Class San Jose is one of the larger, 16-passenger vessels now cruising the Galapagos. Even fully booked, this four-deck ship won’t feel crowded. Originally built to accommodate 20-plus passengers, it has been refurbished with eight, comfortable, twin cabins that stretch from port to starboard.

All of the San Jose’s staterooms are located on the quieter, front half of the main and upper decks—as far from the engine room as possible. The two twin beds in each room are convertible into one double bed. All cabins have a seaside door, which will keep you connected to the Galapagos’ stunning vistas even when you’re underway, off to new places on your adventurous itinerary. The windows in your cabin open to let in daylight and fresh air; or, when you’d like it a bit cooler, control your own room’s air-conditioning level.

Outside, on the upper deck, you can relax on the large sundeck or in the shaded area. Pause to feel the sea breeze; watch whales, dolphins and frigate birds in and over the water; or dream away with the panoramic views.

On the main deck, you’ll find the living room, which offers a cozy setting to listen to the briefings of your naturalist guide, sit back and read a book, or enjoy an exotic cocktail mixed by your expert bartender. In the dining room, you can linger over your buffet-style meals that will take you on another “journey”: one through local and international cuisine.

If you’re going to travel thousands of miles to get “there,” make the most of your migrations. Go with the stretched and spacious San Jose
