Galápagos has a growing population, estimated at around 30.000 inhabitants. They have arrived to the islands in search of job opportunities over the years. About 5.000 are said to be illegal immigrants. Farming, fishing, tourism and construction are the magnet to mainlanders. Only 3% of the islands are inhabitable and the basic services are very limited. This reality has put the local government to work on immigration politics to control the access of more people to the islands, and deport the ones who are illegal in staying in the islands.
